O nome sam\u00e1rio vem do mineral samarskita do qual foi isolado. Embora classificado como um elemento de terras raras, o sam\u00e1rio \u00e9 o 40\u00ba elemento mais abundante na crosta terrestre e \u00e9 mais comum do que metais como o estanho. Na ind\u00fastria nuclear, especialmente o sam\u00e1rio 149 natural e artificial tem um impacto importante na opera\u00e7\u00e3o de um reator nuclear. Samarium 149 tem uma se\u00e7\u00e3o transversal de captura de n\u00eautrons muito grande (cerca de 42000 celeiros).
